  • UK reunion of 6 former Drapchi political prisoners

In 1993 in Drapchi Prison fourteen young nuns - all prisoners of conscience imprisoned for taking part in peaceful demonstrations calling for Tibetan freedom - had their sentences extended by between five and nine years each for recording freedom songs that would later be heard around the world. Of the "Drapchi 14", or "Tibet's singing nuns" as they became known around the world, one died in custody, seven remain in Tibet and six are now living in exile in India, Belgium, Switzerland and the USA.

The Tibetan Community in Britain is honoured to announce it has organised the first ever reunion of the six now living in exile during March/April 2008 in the UK.

Talk & Tribute Concert; Saturday 8th March:

At this unique event in London the six members of the "Drapchi 14" now in exile, who between them spent 71 years in prison, will speak of their time in prison, their exile from Tibet, their continuing struggle for freedom for their homeland, and will sing some of their freedom songs originally sung in prison in 1993. The evening will also include a tribute concert to the "Drapchi 14" by UK-based Tibetan artistes. The reunion will also mark the 10th anniversary of protests inside Drapchi Prison in 1998, after which five nun inmates died as a result of beatings and maltreatment at the hands of the prison authorities.

Time: 7 pm

Venue: Regent Hall, 275 Oxford Street, London, W1R 1LD

Nearest Tube: Oxford Circus or Bond Street

Price: £10, children under 14 free with parents

  •  Tibetan Freedom Torch Rally, London (6th April 2008)

The Beijing Olympic Torch will arrive in London on April 6th. Tibet groups in Europe are planning a mass mobilisation in London and the Tibetan Community is calling on every Tibetan in the UK to participate.

The Chinese government is running the Beijing Olympic torch around the world, hoping to win the approval of the global public and cover up its brutal occupation of Tibet and abysmal human rights record. When the torch relay reaches London on April 6th, China will be in the global spotlight like never before. With your participation, we can use this once in a lifetime opportunity to focus the Olympic spotlight on China's occupation of Tibet.

The London 'Tibetan Freedom Torch' rally is jointly organised by the Tibetan Community in Britain and other Tibet groups in the UK with the participation of Tibetans and supporters from across Europe.

Further details including programme will be posted on the Tibetan Community's website at a later date: http://www.tibetancommunity.org.uk/calender2008.asp
